This course surveys the history of social welfare policy, services, and the social work profession.It explores current social welfare issues in the context of their history and the underlying rationale and values that support different approaches. Emphasis is placed on major fields of social work service such as: income maintenance, health care, mental health, child welfare, corrections, and services to the elderly. Analytic frameworks with regard to social welfare policies and services are presented. These frameworks identify strengths and weaknesses in the current social welfare system with respect to multiculturalism and diversity; social justice and social change; behavioral and social science theory and research; and social work relevant promotion, prevention, treatment,and rehabilitation programs and services in relations to the diverse dimensions (including ability,age, class, color, culture, ethnicity, family structure, gender (including gender identity and gender expression), marital status, national origin, race, religion or spirituality, sex, and sexual orientation).

Classical Sociological Theory and Modern Sociological Theory attempt to give a fundamental mapping of key figures, works and concepts of sociological theory, by tracing some mainlines, problematics and characters of European sociological theory from 1930’s to the contemporary "post- era”, and to build up the basic ability of reading sociological theoretical texts.

This is an introductory course mainly designed for the students in the field of sociology and social work, aiming to load the students with fundamental background, concepts, theories, methods and future trend of social work as a helping profession in a changing social context. It discusses the issues concerning the impoverished areas in our country, the differences in regional development, the polarization of the rich and the poor, urban poverty, microfinance and other topics. The course aims to further the students` understanding and insight on the problems of poverty.

This course provides an overview of the widely-used statistical methods in scientific research and the fundamentals of using the SPSS Base System. The course introduces the interfaces and functions of SPSS and teaches the skills necessary to perform a variety of statistical analyses with both user-friendly interface and syntax. The topics of this course include an overview of SPSS, managing data, creating and editing charts and tables, describing variables, conducting t tests, one-way ANOVA, multi-way ANOVA, correlation, regression and advanced statistical methods like nonparametric analyses, factor analysis, reliability analysis and etc. This course has a companion course "SPSS advanced statistics – laboratory”, which is to be taken at the same time.

General Management is a fundamental course for students of management, also an extension course for non-management students. Social psychology includes how to interact with individuals and groups, and how groups interact with each other. Social psychology can explain human behavior by using psychology theories. This course includes main theories and concepts of the mainstream social psychology. This course also analyzes how to apply social psychology knowledge to social lives, including interpersonal relationship development, communication and conflict etc.. This course also introduces culture perspective to explain human behavior.
