Courses in metaphysics and epistemology, history of philosophy, logic and philosophy of science, ethics, and value theory. Students are required to take a comprehensive examination, including both written and oral components, covering the student's area of specialization.

Students who are admitted to the Ph.D. program with financial aid and who continue to meet relevant academic standards can normally expect at least five years of support. Funding is either in the form of teaching assistantships ($19,185.00 per year + full tuition stipend) or fellowship packages. On a competitive basis we are also able to offer summer funding that brings the total award to the range of $23,185.00 to $25,185.00 per year.

A score of 550 or higher on the paper-based (PBT) version of the test, or a score of 81 or higher on the Internet-based version of the test (iBT).
Admission to the Graduate College requires a total IELTS score of 7.0, with no subscore less than 6.0. In addition, all IELTS test takers—regardless of score—will be required to take an on-campus English Proficiency Evaluation.
